Drinking Alcohol with Cheat Meals is a Dieting Disaster

The dieting world never stops turning.

Everytime I walk into a bookstore, there are always new dieting books greeting me. They promise the next generation breakthrough technology or tricks.

It seems that people are learning the Cheat meals or Cheat days to help them overcome craving after starvation mode of dieting. They use Cheat Days as their weekly excuse to indulge not only in their favorite foods, but also a considerable amount of alcohol.

That’s a really bad idea and I know it.

The whole purpose of the Cheat Day is to upregulate leptin levels, resetting metabolism and creating a hormonal environment that is conducive to fat burning.

However, alcohol consumption pretty much cancels out all the positive benefits. In fact, alcohol consumption has been shown to acutely reduce plasma leptin levels which is in direct opposition to everything you are trying to accomplish with a Cheat Day.

In the end, Cheat Days plus Alcohol equals to Fat GAIN. That’s a weekend disaster after being good in exercise and diet during the weekdays.

Does that mean that you can’t have a drink on your Cheat Day? No, but anything more than 2 drinks will begin to have a negative effect.

Basically, if you’re feeling the effects of the alchohol you consumed, you drank too much.

When you have goals to attain, it requires some level of sacrifice. In other words, you have to give up things of lower order (priority) to receive things of higher power (priority).

We’re constantly making decision all the time. In the morning, what do you choose to eat breakfast (or do you eat breakfast)?

How about lunch time? What do you eat? Where do you eat? Do you eat alone or with your friends or co-workers?

At the end of day, what do you have for dinner? After dinner, do you crash on the sofa, watch TV and munch snacks? Or do you go for a walk or some exercise?

If alcohol is more important than your fat loss goals, that is certainly a decision you’ll need to make.

Choose wisely.

How to Give Up Diet Coke and Lose Up to 10 Pounds in 2 Weeks

Burn 321 Calories Quick

Summer is right here now. It's hot and steamy!

Now you can't hide inside your baggy clothes like in winter time.

If you want to lose weight and shed body fat, there’s simply no way aound it. You absolutely must create some sort of caloric deficit. In the end you must burn more calories than you consume.

You have different options of cutting 300 calories. How you do it has far-reaching effect on your body.

There are many different ways of creating a calorie deficit. Some are more effective and efficient than others.

Option #1: Skip a meal

If you want to create an additional 300 calorie deficit a day, you could simply skip your morning bagel. If you skip the cream cheese, you could save 500 calories. (For the record, I'm not anti-bagel.)

Option #2: Walk an hour on the treadmill

You could walk for an hour on the treadmill to create the same 300 calorie deficit.

Option #3: Do 15 minutes of high intensity interval training workout

You could do a 15 minute high intensity interval training workout and create the same 300 calorie deficit.

Now here’s where things get a little more complicated than the numbers suggest.

In all three options, you are essentially creating an additional 300 calorie deficit a day. But not all calories are created equal. Two thumbs down on Option #1 and Option #2. Option#3 thump them all if you can do it.

Why?

Well, first, let’s say that you decide to create your caloric deficit solely by eliminating calories in your diet. This will only result in some nasty hormonal consequences, slowing down your metabolism . Your body will balance out the very deficit you are trying to create.

There are several issues for Option #2. Spending 60 minutes to burn 300 calories? That’s a long time to invest to burn less than a tenth of a single pound of fat. If you want to burn a pound of fat, you’d have to walk for close to 15 hours.

Who has the time?

Not for me.

The second problem with Option #2 is that there is virtually no so-called “afterburn” effect. Once the walking session is over, your calorie burnig–metabolism goes back on it's initial setpoint.

For Option #3, you’re investing much, much less time, but have the added benefit of the “afterburn” or elevated metabolism for the entire day and can last another day or two after the workout.

Which brings me to the question — how do you want to burn your calories?

Do you try to “diet” your pounds away?

Are you hoping to walk away 5, 10, or even 20 lbs? That will probably take you a few years (of walking).

Or have you embraced the power of intense exercise?

Granted, when you're starting up a fitness program, you're not likely to get right to high intensity training. Start slow yet consistently. Gradually increase the frequency, intensity and duration of your training and workout.

My friend, the choice is yours.

Tennis star Anna Kournikova is confirmed to join NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser" next season as the fitness trainer. She will replace Jillian Michaels next season.

Ann is well-known for her hot bod and her skills on the court. But I don't know, honestly, if she's qualified as a fitness trainer, not to mention to train the big contestants and to please the TV audience.

The two new trainers on "The Biggest Loser" Cara Castronuova and Brett Hoebell joining the show this season didn't receive much praise.

Super Workout: Doubling and Tripling Up Your Chest and Back Muscles

It's coming down to the final phase (4 weeks) of training before the summer offically is here.

So I work out more using superset, triset and circuit training on alternate low to medium training days to complement regular strength training program.

Here is the workout routine to work on chest and back muscles.

Dumbbell Triset (3 sets)
- Dumbbell Bent-over Rows @ 45/45# x 12 reps
- Flat Bench Dumbbell Flye @ 45/45# x 10 reps
- Flat Bench Close-grip Chest Press @ 45/45# x 6-10 reps

Note 1: 45/45# is a bit lighter weight for lat but I feel good squeezing.
Note 2: 45/45# for chest flye is the limiting lift in this triset routine. It's really a pre-exhaustion set that kills most of my energy.
Note 3: I can really feel the "burn" on my chest (or pec minor, to be specific) using 45/45# close-grip chest press.

Cable Superset (3 sets) High Angle
- Pulldown (neutral grip) @ 8 x 10 reps
- Pulldown (neutral to rotating inward) @ 8 x 10 reps
- Chest Cross-over @ 5 x 10 reps
- Chest Cross-over "Most Musclular" stance @ 5 x 10 reps

Happy Mother's Day!


Today is Mother' Day. I wish all mothers, grandmothers, future mothers a terrific, happy Mother's Day.

I give my wife an overnight retreat as her Mother's day gift so that she can be away for an outdoor, nature retreat. She's very appreciated of the gift since we can have Mother's day brunch and dinner anytime we want.

While many people are taking the day off to be with their mothers, wives or sisters, it's a day for me to reflect upon what Mother's Day means and why I'm still working out on Mother' Day.

As a son of my mother, husband of my wife, father of my daughter, the best I can do is to better myself as a person - being healthy, fit and strong - so that I can spend quality time with them. Today is just a bit better than yesterday and the day before.

They know I can take care of them when they need me as I take good care of myself. In fact, this is the only thing I can control in my own power.

Do the following circuit training in 30 minutes.

Circuit Training Workout Routine:
Smith Machine Squat @ 135# x 10 reps
Cybex Machine Lat Pulldown @ 130# x 10 reps
Cybex Machine Chest Press @ 135# x 10 reps
Cybex Machine Low Row @ 125# x 10 reps
Cybex Machine Shoulder Press @ 90# x 10 reps

Rest for 2 minutes at the end of circuit. Repeat for a total of 3 to 5 sets (circuits).

Your mother, wife, daughter and sister would appreciate your hardwork in a big way with kisses and hugs.

We have a few nice warm days. Trees and flowers are blooming. Pollens are running rampant. This is the allergy season many people suffer from for a few weeks.

Don't get sidetracked by the nuances and inconveniences. I know many people, including some of my clients, find plausible excuses not to stick to their plan to exericse and eat right.

The difference between success people and who quit is just a series of very small steps. They face the same challenges and obstables. Successful people are looking forward and focusing on their goals. They know they're a step closer to the detination for every step they're moving forward.

Okay. Enough pep talk and motivation. I can only externally 'motivate' you so much. In the end, you have to intrically motivate youself or inspire youself to doing what you say you want to do, to be and to have.

Here is today's workout routine to help you get beach-body ready. We focus shoulders and arms. These muscles are visible when you wear short sleeves and sleeveless in summer.

Superset (4 sets)
- Smith Machine Shoulder Press @ 115# x 10 reps
- Dumbbell Shoulder Rear Raise @ 20/20# x 15 reps

Superset (3 sets)
- Weighted Dips @ BW+50#DB x 10 x 8 x 8 reps
- 1-DB Overhead Press @ 50#DB x 10 x 10 x 10 reps

Superset (4 sets)
- Biceps Curls @ EZ Bar + 20/20# x 12 reps

Beach Ready Body Shape-up: Barbell Complex Total Body and Core Circuit Training

It's May 1st. Now we're seriously looking forward to nice, warm to hot summer weather and beach season.

If you've been slacking off your strength training, cardio and diet, it's about time to clean up your junk pantry, lace up your running shoes, and pick up weight and lift.

Following yesterday's circuit training based on barbell, dumbbell and bodyweight, here is another fat-burning circuit training that would help you slim down, shape up your 6 pack abs and beach-ready body just in time for the summer.

Part A is a total-body barbell complex circuit workout using the same 135# weight for all exercises that will working on chest, triceps, glutes, lat, traps and core stabilization.

Part B is core circuit workout that will work on your abs, oblique, lower back and hip from different angles and directions.

Part A: Barbell Complex Circuit Workout (135#) x 4 circuits
- Squat x 10 reps
- Bench Press (medium-width grip) x 10 reps
- Romanian Deadlift (mixed-grip) x 10 reps
- Bent-over Rows (underhand grip) x 10 reps
- Traps Shrugs (wide grip) x 10 reps
* Brief break for 15 seconds between exercises to change position.
* Rest for 2 minutes between circuits


Part B: Abs and Core Circuit Workout x 3 circuits
- Decline bench reverse left raise x 10 reps
- Decline bench oblique side twist  and circling x 5 in each direction
- Decline bench weighted full crunches @ 35# x 6 reps
- Decline bench weighted lower half crunches @ 35# 12 reps
- Decline bench weighted upper half crunches @ 35# x 6 reps
