Health Poll Results Announced for 2012 New Year's Resolutions

So what's on your list of New Year's resolutions?

When the New Year's parties end, a lot of us are left with some tough promises to keep.

The latest NPR-Thomson Reuters Health Poll is revealing what Americans are making their New Year's resolutions.

The telephone poll of more than 3,000 adults across the country was conducted during the first half of December. The margin for error is plus or minus 1.8 percentage points. Click here to read the questions and complete results.

How much did people want to lose? Almost half of people with dieting in mind wanted to drop 10 to 29 pounds. About 21 percent wanted to shed between 30 and 49 pounds.

Fifty one percent of all respondents  make a resolution to exercise more. Thirty five percent pledge to lose weight and 9% of smokers  make a resolution to quit smoking.

Some people have had a lot of practice with their vows to do better. A little more than a third of people have resolved to lose weight at least once in the past five years. Among those who have promised themselves they'd shed a few pounds, 38 percent made that resolution five years in a row.

Making a resolution is the easy part. How well do people actually do? Overall, 57 percent of respondents who wanted to lose weight in the past told us they'd reached their goal.

Quitting smoking is more challenging. Among people who had vowed to quit smoking at least once in the past five years, only 36 percent said they had succeeded.

Now, we have to admit that we wondered how accurate people's reports of success on their goals might be. The folks at Practice Fusion, a supplier of electronic medical record systems for doctors' offices, gave us another way of looking at things.

The company combed through a sample of real-world data from doctors' records, including the weights of more than 21,000 patients measured in 2010 and again in 2011. There's a lot of people who are losing some weight. Overall, about 46 percent of people lost some weight. On average, it was about 7 pounds from one year to the next.

Now the Practice Fusion data are from people who saw their doctors regularly, and we don't know how that lines up with respondents to our poll. After looking at the poll's findings and his own company's data, you might not reach your ambitious New Year's health goal, but it's still worth a try. You may lose a little weight, which is better than none at all.

The #1 Reason Why Your New Year's Resolutions Fail and What to Do Instead

Your old-and-never-worked New Year's resolution could be like "I resolve to start exercising 5 to 7 times a week, 30 to 60 minutes each time." If you haven't exercised regularly for the last 3 months, this resolution is bound to fail and you're doomed!

Start with small baby steps. You could start with a combination of walking, aerobic exercise, strength training, and other physical activities for 2 to 3 times for a total accumulation of 2 hours of exercise a week. The key is to be able to get into a regular exercise habit. Gradually increase the duration, variety, intensity and frequency. This is one of the reasons why a coach/trainer can be a really good source of professional guidance and accountability.

Improving health and fitness is on the top 3 New Year's Resolutions for most people. You can witness by the crazy crowd in the gym for the first two weeks. I can testify by the exploding number of visitors to my website and blog and new subscriber signups. People all over the world are searching for advices on losing weight, building muscles, eating right, workout routines, six pack abs, etc.

Health and fitness is the case where haste makes waste, as the old saying goes. Many people start the new year with good momentum, then lose steam by the end of January. By February, most people already quit or visit the gym much less often. Pad yourself on the back if you're still working out by June. You're rare if you're still showing up in the gym regularly by year end.

One study from the University of Scranton showed that a quarter of people who resolve to lose weight and change their eating habits on January 1st will go back to their old ways within a week.

The following list shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on:

- Past the first week: 75%
- Past two weeks: 71%
- Past one month: 64%
- After 6 months: 46%

Source: Auld Lang Syne: Success predictors, change processes, and self-reported outcomes of New Year's resolvers and nonresolvers, by John C. Norcross, Marci S. Mrykalo, Matthew D. Blagys , University of Scranton. Journal of Clinical Psychology, Volume 58, Issue 4 (2002).

Respect yourself by showing your commitment and accountability in healthy lifestyle changes, not just 3 days, one week, or 6 months, permanent, for the long run.

One of the biggest mistakes when people make their New Year's Resolutions is that they want to change and do too many things, too soon and at the same time!

Sooner than later they get so overwhelmed that they simply cannot keep up with and just quit.

Changing or replacing an old habit takes time to become permanently part of you. Healthy lifestyle and habit changes don't just happen overnight. You should have known human behavior by now. It's true to eating healthy and working out regularly.

It's perfectly okay to dream big and have a big goal. But you need break down the big goal into smaller goals and action steps. Dream big but start small.

Make the smaller goals challenging yet still easily and realistically achievable. You'll feel confident and good about yourself when you achieve the small steps. It gives you the momentum, reinforcement and sense of accomplishment to move to the next step, a step closer to your bigger goal.

I suggest that you pick no more than two things to work on in each of the following areas. When you stick to it for one month, then add another one or two thing in the following month. If you're really conscious about your actions, you'll achieve 24 things in one area by the year end. That could be your bigger goal.

I must admit that I cannot start to change with all 24 things at the same time in just one area. But I can certainly focus on just two things in one month.

Thanksgiving Eating Do's and Don'ts

Happy Thanksgiving!
With Thanksgiving just 4 days away and the holiday season around the corner I know how hard it is to resist all the celebrative eating and drinking (and the weight gain that comes with it) so I put together an awesome guide to eating during the holidays.

You DON’T have to totally deprive yourself during the holidays but you DO have to have some willpower to say no!

DON’T try to convince yourself that you’re going to eat less after the holiday event therefore it’s ok to eat what you want during the event. You will not have as much motivation to diet once the event has passed.

DO eat less for the 3-5 days leading up to the event. When the event takes place, you’ll look and feel better than you originally expected and you will feel less guilty when you enjoy yourself at the celebration.

DO dress sexy. Wear something tight, do your hair up, put on your highest heels etc. This way you will feel less likely to indulge in a huge dinner.

DON”T drink wine or beer. Go for hard alcohol if you must have something. Why? Because you can nurse a hard drink all night, but with wine and beer there’s a higher chance you will want another.

DO position yourself as far away from the appetizer table as possible.

DON’T sit in front of the TV. What’s on TV this thanksgiving? An awesome football game. What’s in front of the TV? Most likely a table with snacks. If you really want to watch the game then do it standing up or follow the tips #here#

DO bring your own dish to the occasion. Nobody has to know that it’s healthy or low calorie but at least you’ll know how many calories it has and you will have something to snack on.

DO send people home with food if you are hosting a party.

DO sit at the table as far from the unhealthy food options as possible. If you have to keep standing up, putting your drink down and reaching across Aunt Margaret to grab a piece of bread you’re not going to have as many pieces as if it was right in front of you.

Stick to these guidelines and I promise you will keep the weight off while everyone around you gains another 4-8 pounds!

Celebrity Fitness Trainer Carey Yang Offers 9 Simple Tricks to Cut 500 Calories

Follow these 9 simple calorie-blasting or calorie-saving strategies offered by celebrity fitness trainer Carey Yang based in Denville, Morris County, New Jersey to help you lose weight and burn more fat all day long. Yang is the president, owner and master trainer of Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC.

Breakfast
Swap your bagel for an English muffin to slash 220 calories, a glass of whole milk for skim to save 70 calories, and a three-egg omelet for one egg and two egg whites, or pork sausage for turkey sausage to cut about 125 calories each.

Lunch
Try wearing a pedometer to measure out 10,000 steps a day or about 5 miles. You’ll automatically burn 500 calories without even hitting the gym.

Dinner
Rather than depriving yourself of food to drop pounds, simply use smaller plates. If you shrink the size of your dishes by a quarter, such as going from a 12-inch plate to a 9-inch plate, you’ll cut 500 calories without feeling deprived.

Dessert
Save up to 400 calories by making grilled fruit kebabs. Slice one peach and one small banana into quarters, thread four pieces fruit each onto two skewers, and brush with one tbsp honey each. Grill each side for about 4 minutes, or until flesh is tender but still firm. Sprinkle on cinnamon. Or, if you want to have your cake, cut a thin slice of pound cake, layer on berries and top with light whipped cream for a decadent-tasting dessert for less than 150 calories.

Dining Out
Before you head to a chain restaurant, check out the nutrition information on its web site. You’ll be able to make smarter meal choices. Instead of having Chili’s Steak and Portobello Fajitas for 1130 calories, you can choose Chili’s Classic Chicken Fajitas for just 360 calories—a savings of almost 800!

At Work
You can burn up to an extra 500 calories a day without doing a lot of activity simply by standing rather than sitting,. It can make the difference between burning 120 calories an hour versus 60 calories. If you can’t get away from your desk, try standing to make a phone call or read a report. Even shutting your office door to squeeze in 5 minutes of pushups or jumping jacks can burn another 50 calories.

Watching TV
Do some exercise during commercial break such as jumping rope or jogging in place. It burns about 10 calories a minute. If you watch an hour of TV a night and add cardio moves during the 10 commercial breaks that typically air, you could blast up to 300 extra calories without missing your favorite shows.

On Weekends
It's good to sleep in on weekends. Studies show people who get less than 6 hours of sleep eat up to 300 calories more during the day because a lack of sleep triggers the production of the hunger hormone, grehlin. Each extra hour of sleep could save you 100 calories. So don’t set your alarm on Saturday, and if you snooze, you lose.

During Workout
You can burn up to an additional 250 calories in a half-hour, or 500 in an hour, by incorporating intervals versus exercising at the same pace Whether you’re swimming laps, running, riding a stationary bike, or using the treadmill, you can increase the calorie burn by picking up the pace to the point where you are so out of breath that you can’t even talk for 30 seconds, then slow down for one and half minutes to recover.

Crush Your Fat Genes and Train Like A Fitness Model Without Being One

Morris County Personal Trainer Carey Yang will lead a new group fitness training class titled “Crush Your Fat Genes: Train Like a Fitness Model Without Being One” starting Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 7:30 pm. This fat-burning and muscle-toning boot camp will take place at Morris Knolls High School in Rockaway, New Jersey.

DENVILLE, NJ -- February 20, 2011 – Two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese. Obesity has become epidemic and the number one disease to fight against to minimize the risk of cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and high blood pressure.

“Overweight and obesity has negatively impacted our healthcare system and drained our resources,” says Carey Yang, a personal trainer and owner of Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC based in Denville, New Jersey.

“As a personal trainer, my job is help my clients get on a healthy lifestyle by motivating them, doing regular workout through strength training and cardio exercises, and eating a nutrient-rich diet,” said Yang. “The problem is that far too many people are too busy to do any of those due to modern lifestyle. It’s my mission to change and reverse the down trend.”

Many fat people blame their fat genes by looking at their parents and family. Some research findings seem to prove that. But it is not conclusive. Obesity is the result of many influences. Genetics is only one of them.

“Most of the factors that affect body composition are entirely under your control. These factors include how much you eat, what you eat, when you eat, what type of exercise you do, how frequently you exercise, how long you exercise and how hard you exercise,” Yang said.

Yang is leading a group fitness training class called “Crush Your Fat Genes: Train Like a Fitness Model Without Being One.”

This fitness training program lets the students experience the most effective, time-efficient workouts for fat loss and muscle toning. “Whatever it takes” is the motto.

“Yes, you can train and look like a fitness model without being one, at any age. The total-body CORE program combines kickboxing and self-defense while utilizing bodyweight and light weights,” Yang said. “You’ll walk out of the training with a sense of pride, self-confidence and feeling of strength, energy and stamina.”

The group fitness class will be held at Morris Knolls High School, 50 Knoll Drive in Rockaway, New Jersey on Tuesdays March 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

The class is $49 per person for all 4 sessions. Registration is required by calling Morris Hills Adult and Continuing Education at (973) 664-2295 or visiting online http://www.mhcontinuingedu.com/. Enter class code 6173.

Jump Start Your New Year's Resolutions by Taming Holiday Bulge

This is the time of the season again when people are stressed out with holiday shopping. The economic downtime (albeit on the way of recovering) has added salt to the wound - pushing many people out of jobs.

One of the biggest traps for people wanting to lose weight is to use foods as a way of comforting themselves or soothing their stress and anxiety and make them feel good.

Many people eat even when they are physically hungry. When eating food is nothing to do with fulfilling basic survival needs and fueling your body, it becomes emotional eating - from stress, boredom, anxiety, frustation, loneliness, sadness, etc.

Holidays, parties, social functions, weather are all triggers to binge eating or emotional eating. If you feel guility after eating, that's unhealthy eating behavior. You should feel satisfied after eating for physical hungry.

On the New Year's Eve, almost everyone is reflecting the past year and looking forward to the coming year. The New Year's resolutions seem to become cliche. Many people stop making them since one-third of them quit in the first month. Half of them will be gone after six months.

Starting a new page for the New Year requires letting go of some of the bad habits and beliefs that didn't serve you.  Here are the top 7 holiday diet traps and some strategies to beat them before making a clean start for your New Year's resolutions.
  1. Dinner buffet and cocktail party. The social and family gatherings are inevitable. We're in the world of abundance - plenty of food selections and feasts. No wonder two-third of Americans are either overweight or obese. To avoid social overeating and binge, you can eat a light meal or snack packed with lean protein and fiber about one to two hours before the event. When you're not that hungry, you're  less likely to make poor unhealthy choices.
  2. Eat while you cook. Have you been wondering why it's rare to see a fit chef? When you cook, you're likely to taste a little here and there. These calories do add up. You can try to chew mint-flavored gum to keep your mouth busy. You can try to sniff peppermint oil. It helps depress appetite by stimulating the area of the brain to make you feel full. So you'll eat less even you do.
  3. Eat everything on the table. This is the one you want to be picky eater. Before you sit down to chow, "survey" the foods to be served including drinks, appetiziers, entries, deserts, etc. Instead of eating everything, choose a few (hopefully balanced out with good carb, vegetables, lean protein and essential fats) that you really like and enjoy them. Leave some room (discretionary calories) for special dishes that you can only have during the holidays.
  4. Portion, portion, portion! This is a no-brainer. But most people are still side-tracked or put themselves in situations that they don't have control. If you use a smaller plate or bowl, you'll fill up less amount of food at every meal. It will help you eat less (or the right amount). Pay attention to the recommended porition size. For example, one serving of rice is half a cup; not a full cup. That's 100 calorie difference!
  5. Mindless eating. Notice that how much more you eat when you watch TV, read magazine or listen to a CD or tape than eating alone or in silence? When your mind is busy with something else while eating, you don't fully savor the taste and tend to overeat. So start practicing 'mindful' eating.
  6. Winter domance or hibernation. The bitterly cold weather in winter makes many people become dormant or go into hibernation. They don't move much at all and certainly are less likely to burn enough calories to maintain their weight. Stay active. Do short 10 to 15 minutes of exercises using bodyweight or simple free weights at home even if you can't go to gym.
  7. Lack of quality sleep and rest. We're already a sleep-deprived nation. The hustle and bustle over the holidays just make it worse for many people to get enough 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep. When you sleep less than 5 hours, your body produces lower level of leptin, a hormone that controls how full you feel. You also have higher level of ghrelin that stimulate appetite. In the end, you tend to eat more and gain weight.
It's your decision now to release the old bad habits and make room for the new healthy positive changes.

My best wishes for the New Year!

Top 9 Secrets to Releasing Your Stubborn Belly Fat

1) Go Spicy. Red peppers, the spicy ingredient in Mexican and Indian dishes contains Capsaicin which can increase the metabolic rate by effecting the Sympathetic Branch of the Nervous system. Spiking your chicken dishes with red peppers might be a small benefit or you can gulp 5 to 10 encapsulated grams of Capsaicin from your local health food store. (Journal of Nutrition 116:1272-1278, 1986.)

2) Don’t Be Cardio Crazy! Radically reducing calories slows the metabolism short circuiting fat loss. Same is true with radical caloric expenditure. You know: 2 cardio sessions a day. Excess cardio slows the metabolism, promotes a loss in muscle and even can lower testosterone levels. For real results, stick to 4-6 sessions a week, 30 – 45 minutes at a clip and maintain a high level of intensity.

3) Separate Cardio From Weight Training. What happens when you do cardio first and follow it up with weight training – you don’t build as much muscle density. How bout cardio after training? You risk overtraining and the negative hormonal milieu that can stifle the metabolic rate. The best scenario; hit the cardio in the morning – on an empty stomach – get in a few meals and return to the gym later in the day to build muscle density.

4) Serotonin Control. Serotonin is a brain chemical that helps controls hunger. Guess what? It can take a nose dive with dieting. ( R.J. Wurtman and J.J. Wurtman, “Brain serotonin, carbohydrate-craving, obesity, and depression.” Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology 398 (1996): 35-41.) One way to prevent a drop; smaller, more frequent meals.

5) Garlic Chicken! Mother earth’s flavor enhancer stimulates adrenaline and uncoupling proteins (UCP). Adrenaline triggers fat breakdown and UCP, located in metabolically active “brown fat” increase calorie burning. Garlic also controls cortisol levels which can supports muscle retention while dieting. For best results use fresh raw garlic in your salads or on your other meals, but if you can't handle raw garlic then use fresh bulbs in you cooking or give supplements a try. (Oi Y, et al., Allyl-containing sulfides in garlic increase uncoupling protein content in brown adipose tissue, and noradenaline and adrenaline secretion in rats. J Nutr 129:336-342,1999.) (Wang HX, Et al., Natural products with hypoglycemic, hypotensive, hypocholesterolemic, antiatherosclerotic and antithrombotic activities. Life Sci 65:2663-2677,1999.)

6) Sip Green Tea. Green tea contains caffeine and polyphenols called epilgallocatechin gallate which have been shown to increase calorie burning. These special calorie burning compounds help burn an extra 100 or-so calories a day about that equal to a brisk walk. In maximizing fat loss, every calorie counts. (Dullo, A.G., et al., Efficiency of a green tea extract rich in catechin polyphenols and caffeine in increasing 24-h energy expenditure and fat oxidation in humans. Am J Clin Nutr, 1999. 70(6):p.1040-5.)

7) Fat? Yes Fat! To rip up, you have to eat fewer carbs, but on occasion – say once a week - you can add a little healthy fat, 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil, some red meat, walnuts or cashews. The reason? Dietary fat can make the body more effective in using and burning fat – as long as calories and carbs remain under control. (Thomas CD et al. Nutrient Balance and Energy Expenditure During the Ad Libitum Feeding of High Fat and High Carbohydrate Diets in Humans. Am J Clin Nutr 1992;55:934)

8) Thyroid Support. Irony of Ironies. When you eat less and try to dump body fat, a lot of times the metabolism adapts and burns quite a bit fewer calories. One way to get a round the slowdown is with phosphates. A combo of 537 mgs of calcium phosphate, 107 mgs of potassium phosphate and 25 mgs of sodium phosphate given to strict dieters yielded a 12-19% more elevated metabolism than dieters who did not use phosphates.

9) Write It Down. This one seems simple, but it’s one of the most overlooked tips in shedding fat. Dieters who record what they eat, meal by meal, day by day, not only make better choices, but cheat less and eat fewer total calories. Writing it down “keeps you honest” and is a tool for reminding you that getting lean is a day by day process.

Is Raw Food Diet Good for Losing Weight?

Obesity has taken the shape of an epidemic in the modern world. More and more people are falling prey to obesity due to an unhealthy lifestyle and bad food habits. But obesity can have disastrous effects on a person’s health.

Weight gain doesn’t necessarily come because of the number of calories you eat. It is what type of calories you eat. When you eat foods that are highly processed they cause digestive disorders which cause you to gain weight.

A raw food diet has proven to be of great aid in this regard after people following different variations of the diet have claimed drastic weight loss in a relatively short period of time, and without feeling hungry or miserable like you would with most diets. There is an ample amount of truth to this claim as the diet practitioners have proven that the raw food diet truly helps in losing weight quickly and effectively.

Going on a Raw Food Diet will help your body to cleanse itself of all the junk that has been piling up in your organs, intestines and of course your fat cells. Due to the nature of the digestive and cleansing enzymes in the food itself, the more you eat the more cleansing occurs. There is no need to worry about consuming too many calories because they will not get stored as fat.

Some medical experts see great benefits in the raw food diet. In addition to enabling weight loss, the diet can ostensibly increase one’s metabolism, making calorie burning easier. Some medical experts have also suggested that a raw food diet is a good antidote to eating disorders. In addition, it can help make your immune system stronger, and help the body rid itself of harmful toxins.

Starting a Raw Food Diet is fairly simple. Some of the best raw foods you can eat are obviously fruits and vegetables, but there are others such as seeds, nuts, grains, beans and sprouts. If you are trying to lose weight fast, you will want to know about some of the raw foods that have the best fat and calorie burning properties.

For fruits, these include apples, grapefruits, mangos, pears, peaches, lemons and cherries. These vegetables are great for a midmorning or mid afternoon snack to stave off those hunger attacks.

For vegetables, artichokes, brussel sprout, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, cucumber, red pepper, mushrooms and cabbage are all great foods to help promote fat and calorie burning. As far as herbs, garlic and parsley leaf are great additions to your raw foods to add additional flavor. This is one of the best natural weight loss.

If you decide a raw food diet is for you, you might consider supplements to compensate for the nutrients this diet is lacking. Some supplements to consider include vitamin B12, copper, zinc, and chromium.

Another thing to consider when taking up a raw food diet is that most of the fruits and vegetables that you see in your supermarket are loaded with pesticides. Therefore, it might be best to consume only organic raw food.

Can Green Tea Really Help You Lose Weight?

Dieters are always searching for The Holy Grail of weight lossa substance that melts fat effortlessly. As a result, ads for miracle diet pills and fat loss potions are everywhere. But its pretty obvious that if any of these products worked, there wouldnt be an obesity epidemic.

Recently, though, theres evidence that a chemical found in ordinary green tea, epigallocatechin gallate, may offer a bit of weight loss magic. Since repeating that name is pretty challenging, lets just call it EGCG for short.

Green tea basics

Green tea (camellia sinensis) has been used for centuries in Asian countries. Unlike black teas, which are made with fermented leaves, green tea is produced by steaming fresh leaves. This production process results in higher content of polyphenols like EGCG, which is a flavonol. Black tea has 3-10% polyphenols, while green tea has 30-40%.

Benefits of green tea

Because of its high polyphenols, green tea is ascribed all kinds of health benefits, from normalizing blood pressure to lowering cancer risk. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database lists many of these, but the only benefit labeled likely effective is mental alertness, likely due to the caffeine content. Future research will likely clarify whether or not any of the phenols have disease-fighting effects.

Can you lose weight with green tea?

The proposed mechanism for green teas calorie-burning properties lies in the ability of EGCG to increase thermogenesis, or heat production, by influencing enzymes in the metabolic process. This doesnt necessarily mean that you will feel hot after drinking green tea. Rather it means that EGCG seems to increase the amount of calories burned throughout the day for all activities, from digesting food to climbing stairs to typing. Other food components, like caffeine or capsaicin (in hot peppers) can boost calorie burning, but EGCG has a stronger effect. However, the effect is not likely to melt pounds off overnight.

Green tea boosts metabolism and accelerates weight loss

A variety of studies on the effect of EGCG on weight and metabolism have been published. Most of them have encouraging results. In one study, energy expenditure was compared in men who were given green tea extract versus caffeine or plain water. The green tea extract caused a 4% boost in metabolism. The amount of extract given was approximately the amount reported to be in a cup of green tea. In another example , men given tea fortified with EGCG lost more weight compared to men given unfortified tea.

Conclusion: Green tea is worth a try for weight loss

If you enjoy drinking green tea and you are watching your weight, you might already be getting a small boost in metabolism. If you want to try adding green tea to your diet plan, keep in mind it also contains caffeine, albeit less than coffee. Also, the polyphenols in green tea are biologically active, and may interfere with medications you take. A pharmacist or physician can advise on this issue. As research into the effects of EGCG continues and its usefulness as a metabolism-booster is clarified, purified forms may become available.

For now, enjoy a cup of green tea. Just dont expect weight loss miracles.
