Male Breast Cancer Survivors Find Inspiration, Support, Hope, Coping Strategies at Breast Cancer Conference Keynote

Mindful wellness expert and life coach Hueina Su was the keynote speaker inspiring and guiding nearly one hundred breast cancer patients and survivors at a breast cancer conference.

DENVILLE, NJ – April 11, 2011 – Breast cancer patients and survivors found inspiration, support, hope and coping strategies for their breast cancer journey at a recent breast cancer conference in Newton, New Jersey. The conference was co-hosted by Summit Breast Care and Beyond Horizon Coaching.

Keynote speaker at the breast cancer conference was Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, a best-selling author, mindful wellness expert, certified life coach, and the president of Beyond Horizon Coaching based in Denville, New Jersey.

The conference received overwhelmingly positive response from breast cancer patients, survivors and local community. The advance registration more than doubled from originally planned. As a result, the conference has to move from Sparta Health & Wellness Center to Project Self-Sufficiency conference room in order to accommodate more than a hundred participants, staff and vendors.

“I’m honored to be in a position to inspire, help and coach breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers through their breast cancer journey,” Su said. “Having been a registered nurse, a caregiver to family members with cancer, and having experienced a breast cancer scare myself, I know first-hand it’s a tough journey, and I’m here to help.”

Coping with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues. Su offered real life tools and tips to help breast cancer patients navigate the journey from diagnosis through treatment and to survivorship.

Since June 2010, Su has been leading a Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta, New Jersey. Over 80 cancer patients and caregivers have participated and benefited from Su’s stress relief coaching program.

“Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in cancer patients’ immune function and healing process. Learning how to cope with stress effectively is critical for their recovery and emotional well-being. Cancer patients and survivors regain a sense of control and become more confident and resilient in dealing with cancer and other life changes through learning stress relief techniques, self-care practices and life skills,” Su said.

“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with cancer and other terminally ill patients as a registered nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on physical health and emotional well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su said.

The breast cancer conference was organized by Summit Breast Care and Beyond Horizon Coaching, and sponsored by the Sparta Cancer Center, Newton Memorial Hospital, the Sussex County Cancer Coalition and Project Self-Sufficiency. Health and wellness vendors also showcased their products and services for breast cancer care.

“The last “R” is “Reclaim” where we reclaim and reconnect with our inner essence, who we truly are, in order to have true inner peace and long-lasting freedom from stress,” Su said. “What we need to reclaim is what I call My Inner Essence including five elements: My Inner Balance, My Inner Beauty, My Inner Wisdom, My Inner Purpose, and My Inner Power.”

Su commented, reclaiming your peaceful power is particularly important to those who are facing major challenges or setbacks such as cancer patients undergoing treatment, cancer survivors, business owners, women going through divorce or career transition.

“Cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Coping with diagnosis and treatment of cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues,” said Su. “I have used the same 3-R process to coach cancer patients, cancer survivors and caregivers to help them navigate the cancer treatment journey and become more resilient and confident in dealing with cancer and other life changes in my Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at a cancer center.”

Su said, “Cancer patients and caregivers are very prone to stress and overwhelm. 3 Stress Butt-sters

It's a lifestyle in the modern society. We got everything powered, so convenient. We (or most of us) don't need to do heavy labor work to make a living. Oftentimes, we sit and sit all day in front of computer, in meetings, on the desk.

Our butts are getting really lazy to move around. Guess what, all the calories accumulate and pile on our mid section.

That in turn causes more stress to your body and mind. And stress leads to potential weight gain from cortisol and stress- eating.

Here are 3 stress-butt-sting tips in the workplace.

If your work schedule allows, take 5 minutes break every hour and do the following in order.

#1 Do 30 bodyweight air squats followed by 30 bodyweight pushups.
#1a Do as many squats as possible in 30 seconds followed by as many pushups as possible in 30 seconds.

#2 Drink a glass of water.

#3 Walk around the hallways for 3 minutes.

It's that easy to get your exercise, water intake and stress-relief in 5 minutes.

You'll feel much pumped up, rejuvenated, and relieved to get back to work.

Top 5 Weight Loss Traps

When you're dieting, you know that you should have and could have done to save the calories, but then surrender in the last minute. What went wrong?

Here are 5 dieting traps and how to avoid them.

1. Feeling pressured to eat in social functions.
Simply eat something before you show up. Tell the host or hostess that you enjoy the party very much but just have a big meal before you come or you're leaving soon for another function. Nibble on healthy appetizers.

2. Two for One - Sabotaged by your partner
When you want to shape up or eat healthy, but your significant other doesn't. That's tough. And it could cause trouble in your relationship. Suggest that you work out together or find mutually enjoyable activities to do. Find alternate healthy menu. Reduce the portion size.

3. Visualizing you're thinner than you really are
After all, more than 2/3 of Americans are either overweight or obese. Yet only 40 percent of them believe themselves to be too fat. When you're surrounded by so may overweight people around you every day, your brain thinks that you're one of them even if you're not. So take a picture of yourself. Know your BMI and body fat%. You can measure using a scale or get a personal trainer to measure for you. Your image in the mirror won't always register in your brain. But an actual real picture of yourself will.

4. You're stressed out
When you're stressed out, you're more likely to resort to binge-eating due to a brain hormone called cortico-trophin-releasing factor (CRF). Your ability to manage your stress and put it under control has a great deal to do with your overall health. Take deep breaths for a minute focusing on the center of your chest. Your breathing helps your mind to calm down and relax.

5. You're a perfectionist
Many people adopt hung-ho all-or nothing approach to weight loss. It's a sure-fire prescription to disaster. There is NO perfect weight loss solution. The perfect one is a regime that you can stick it, follow through and see results. If you give yourself 10% chance of slacking off, you'll still be on track without derailing. That's, if you're good 90% of the time in your exercise and nutrition plan, you'll be perfectly okay. Think long term - 3 years, 5 years from now. In fact, it's life-long journey and commitment.

Refresh and Recharge Yourself for a Stress-less Holiday Season

Thanksgiving was over, but shopping and getting ready for the holidays just got started in full swing. It could be very overwhelming, stressful and draining your energy.

I know many people start to skip workout. The commercial gym that I go to regularly was quite empty on "Black Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving) morning. It was less than 1/10 of the usual traffic. But the parking lots in the malls was full and the stores were packed.

Staying stress-free in this holiday season in the #1 topic on the web and magazines. You may not have time to take the whole day off for yourself to relax. How about 2 hours? Can you spare an hour or 30 minutes? I'm sure you have many 5-minute breaks throughout the day.

Stress, Mindless Eating and Fat Gain

When we're stressed out, we tend to craze for sweet and greasy foods to make us feel good. Many people pig out on high-carb, high-fat, high-calorie but low-nutrient-value foods.


Eat, Eat and Eat More

By the time you realize it, you mindlessly shovel two bags of chips plus a jar of salsa, or munch a double cheeseburger along with a large order of fries and a supersized soda, or perhaps gobble six packs of beer with all the high-fat, high-calorie finger foods while watching TV all night. Enjoying a few drinks at night to unwind your stressful day could turn into an overeating disaster.


You Can't Stop Eating?!

You just cannot seem to stop eating 'til you really feel full and stuffed. That's very likely 1000+ calories of "feeling good" junk food. You rationalize that, "since I feel better now, I'll go to gym to work out tomorrow." You know that probably won't happen since your life spins around again with the same stress cycle. No wonder you've gained all the fat, particularly around the belly. That's why it's called "beer belly."

You know your weakness in food. You know you have to stop it but simply cannot help it.


Tips for Taming Your Stress, Emotional and Impulsive Eating

I have the following tips to share with you as to how to use food to fuel your body, replenish your energy and soothe your stress while enjoying the food and eating mindfully to manage your weight.

  1. Recognize your stress triggers and signals. Your body releases a stress hormone cortisol that triggers the release of two neurotransmitters. These two brain chemicals make you increasingly crave for sugary and fatty foods.
  2. Take your time, sit down for at least three meals to eat mindfully. Enjoy the healthy, nutritious foods. Savor the tastes. You'll feel fuller and more satisfied than eating mindlessly. You'll eat fewer calories. Some natural herbs or their essential oils such as pepperment may help curb appetite and eat less.
  3. Keep healthy snacks in your home, office and car. When you're hungry and ready for snacks, you have all the healthy snacks in your reach. You won't run to the vending machine or drive through fast food joints to pick up the sugary, high-fat foods.
  4. Watch out for the few drinks, particularly during and after dinner, and in special occasions. The calories do add up. Don't "drink" your calories. Try to replace the sugary drinks with tea. Keep the alcohol to a glass of wine with dinner. Alcohol disturbs sleep pattern, which makes sleep-deprived you even more stressful.
  5. Eat a balanced diet by eating high-fiber, low-sugar breakfast and a good balance of complex carb, lean protein, healthy essential fats for other meals. Your blood sugar will be more stable throughout the day, leaving you less stressful and less likely to overeat mindlessly.
  6. Some nutrients are helpful in soothing stress such as B vitamins, folate, omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium.
  7. Eat antioxidant-rich nutrients or supplements to help absorb or neutralize superoxide free radicals generated from oxidative stress. The superoxide free radicals were proven to be causes of many diseases, health problems and aging.
  8. Learn and practice self-care and stress management techniques. Seek alternative or preventive methods beyond the traditional fix-it approach.
