Morris County personal trainer Carey Yang pays tribute to “The Godfather of Fitness” Jack LaLanne, a pioneer in the health and fitness industry, who passed away at age 96.
DENVILLE, NJ -- January 25, 2011 -- The health and fitness world lost an inspirational icon Jack Lalanne who died at age 96 on January 23, 2011. Jack LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia at his home in Morro Bay, California.
“Jack was the pioneer of modern exercise and fitness. He was such an inspiration that I wish everyone, including myself, would do by exercising and eating healthy every day. It’s sad to hear about the passing of such a great man,” said Carey Yang, a fitness expert and personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC in Denville, Morris County, New Jersey.
Francois Henri "Jack" LaLanne (September 26, 1914 – January 23, 2011) was an American fitness, exercise, nutritional expert, and motivational speaker who had been called “The Godfather of Fitness.”
He published numerous books on fitness and hosted the longest-running fitness television show for 34 years. LaLanne opened the very first health spa in 1936 in Oakland, CA, and has since dedicated his whole life to encouraging people to better themselves through exercise and fitness.
Even the most famous exercise "Jumping Jack" was named after Jack LaLanne. It proves that Jack has such a huge impact on the general population. He's the godfather and the most influential person of modern fitness industry. “Without Jack there wouldn’t have been Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons, Denise Austin, Kathy Kaehler, Jillian Michaels, or Bob Harper,” Yang said.
LaLanne gained recognition for his success as a bodybuilder as well as for his prodigious feats of strength. He was inducted to the California Hall of Fame and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“I remember watching his TV interview when he turned 95 and was promoted his new book back in late 2009,” Yang said. “Jack was just as energetic and passionate about fitness and exercise as he’s ever been. He was doing his signature leg raise while sitting on the studio chair. Jack’s truly amazing!”
Yang said: Jack is the ultimate role model for lifelong health and fitness. He’s my hero and remained forever in my heart. Jack will be remembered and respected for years to come.

Why did you start the business?
I have been a multi-sport athlete since my childhood, so growing up I had been always physically active. However, with my life changes in school, family and work, I was once struggling with sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits like so many people. I finally got myself back together in good shape. In my journey, I found my passion in fitness training, nutrition education, and helping people discover their powerful body and mind. To get fit and stay in really good shape, particularly after 40, you have to have healthy habit and mindset, be 100% in your diet and 100% in your workout. It is my mission to make a difference in people’s lives by enhancing the quality of their lives through fitness training, wellness & lifestyle coaching, and education. I’m specialized in helping busy working professionals, business owners and parents who want safe, effective workouts with maximum results in minimum time.
If you could do it again, what would you do differently?
If I could do it again, I would have enrolled in a business coaching and mastermind program that could have saved me time.
What's the best business advice you have ever received?
Do what you love. Love what you do.
What personality trait helps you the most?
Indomitable spirit, perseverance, and self-discipline through martial arts and sports training help me the most to get through the ups and downs in personal life and business.
What's the hardest part of the job?
The hardest part of the job as a personal trainer and fitness coach is to help people understand that they’re worthy of everything by investing in their body, their health, and the ultimate benefits of joy, happiness and life satisfaction. Just visualize the self-confidence, looking good and feeling great after losing weight, getting in shape and living a healthy lifestyle. Invest now. Don’t pay for it later!
The easiest?
The easiest part of my job is to develop customized training program and workout routines for my clients. This is the part I love to do and am the best.
What's your least expensive product or service?
The least expensive product (and it's free) is my introductory 5-Part "Jump Start Your Body!" e-Course on muscle building, fat loss, nutrition & recipes, training strategies, core conditioning. You can download the free course by visiting my website. If you feel I’m the right trainer and coach you want to work with, simply go to my website to request a complimentary fitness consultation and discuss how I can bring values and benefits to help you transform your body, and change your life to a whole new YOU!
The most expensive?
The most expensive yet the most effective program is the "Shake Those Pounds" Intensive that consists of my signature 6-Step Dream Body BlueprintTM body transformation system, private one-on-one personal training, accountability coaching, kitchen makeover, grocery shopping tour, and shadow living. I only two clients in this program at any given time.
Describe your most unusual customer, job or work experience.
I have many baby boomer clients who want to lose weight, get in good shape and improve their health. An 60-year-old client starts kickboxing (a modified version) as part of her training program and is loving it! She feels like 50 or 45. Age is just a number as she quotes herself.
When you leave the business, what will you do?
Health and fitness is a lifelong journey. It’s true for me personally and for fitness business in helping people transform their body and improve their fitness. I would never leave the fitness and helping-people business. In fact, I'm raising capital to build my own Integrated Fitness and Wellness Center through real estate investment.
In one sentence, tell us why customers should use your services.
I have strong desire, passion, knowledge, and expertise to help people improve their health, fitness and quality of life. I’m specialized in helping busy working professionals, business owners and parents who want safe, effective workouts with maximum results in minimum time.

Morris County Fitness Expert Carey Yang Interviewed in Suburban Trends on Exercise Benefits of Gardening
Gardening is one of the most popular past-time hobbies in the world. It helps spruce up your home or property. Some people plant their own fruits and vegetables. Gardening has many health benefits for your body and mind.
I was recently interviewed and quoted in Suburban Trends on “Mend your body & mind in the garden”.
Here is a full write-up by the correspondent KARA ROMANSKI.

WEST MILFORD — In addition to the beauty it brings to your own space as well as the entire neighborhood, gardening has many health benefits that can help you nurture and strengthen the mind and body—along with those perennials and peas. And, you do not need a green thumb to reap the rewards of this growing past-time in our communities of combining gardening with exercise.
Exercise benefits
Along with biking five miles in 30 minutes and walking for two miles, The National Institute of Health lists gardening for 30 to 45 minutes as one of its recommended activities for moderate levels of exercise to combat obesity.
Gardening contributes to physical health since activities, such as pulling weeds, digging holes, planting flowers and plants, are all part of three important types of physical activity: endurance, flexibility and strength. Gardening is included with other moderate exercise that can help burn calories and lose weight. You just have to be active for at least 30 minutes to enjoy the physical benefits.
Karen Gureasko, of Denville, a former freelance garden designer has always had a garden.
“I like gardening because you set a short-term goal and get immediate results,” said Gureasko. “There’s a great deal of stretching and weight bearing exercises that you do at your own pace.”
Weight bearing exercises, such as lifting bags of top soil and mulch, pushing wheelbarrows and shoveling, and raking help enhance bone growth and stop bone loss. And, anytime you hold on to handles or tools, you’re working on your forearm and biceps.
“If you choose gardening as an exercise, just be sure to do it properly to avoid injury,” said Carey Yang, a certified personal trainer based in Denville, who trains Gureasko. “Warm up with a stretch before you start to avoid back and knee pains. Also, stay hydrated and cool every 30 minutes.”
Lift your spirits
Nurturing your garden can be a real stress reducer, helping alleviate feelings of anxiety and providing a meditation break from the rush of the everyday.
Multiple studies show that a green-filled environment helps people relax, raises pain tolerance for people with chronic disorders, and improves moods. One of these studies, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, found that regular exposure to natural environments such as gardens help people recover from the ill effects of stress more quickly.
“The process of watching your garden grow is therapeutic and rewarding. If you’re digging a hole, mending the soil or carrying 40-pound bags of fertilizer, you can not answer your cell phone,” said Gureasko.
Don’t stress if you do not have room for a garden in your own backyard. There is most likely a community garden near you. Perhaps you do not have enough green space or your yard does not get enough sun.
“It can be difficult to garden in West Milford, there’s a lot of rocks and boulders,” said owner David Watson-Hallowell of Sustainable West Milford, which offers a sunny piece of land where residents could gather to garden and learn.
Community gardens
The Community Garden in West Milford is an organic garden, which means no chemicals are allowed on or in the soil. Becoming a member is open to the public and free-of-charge.
While members are welcome to purchase organic seeds from any source, there are several local farms that sell organically grown seedlings to the members too. And fertilizer (horse manure) is donated by local stables.
Thirty West Milford families utilize the plots in the garden, growing vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Members are comprised of master gardeners and novice growers, children, retired folks, and every one in between. The food they harvest is for their own enjoyment. Any harvest in excess of what they can use is donated through its Ample Harvest program to local food pantries.
“There is a real sense of community and friendship among our gardeners,” said Watson-Hallowell. “Members take care of each others plots and each other in the process. It is a great way for people who are not familiar with gardening to get introduced to it in a high success rate environment.”

Fitness Expert Carey Yang Interviewed on Middle-Aged Women Exercise and Weight Management
Yang is the Founder and Master Trainer of Beyond Fitness Solutions in Denville, New Jersey.
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on middle-aged women’s weight challenges has hit the news headline.
According to the 13-year study on 34,079 middle-aged women, they gained an average of almost 6 pounds during the study.
The findings suggest that at least an hour of moderate activity a day is needed for older women to avoid weight gain who aren’t dieting.
Yang was quoted that you don’t have to go to gym every day. Other activities such as walking, hiking or golf also help burn calories.
“This is a wake-up for many middle-aged woemn to start taking charge of their health,” Yang said.
“Hormonal changes in menopause and pregnancy are already two strikes against women,” Yang said. “But you’re not out yet – if you set realistic goals based on your personal needs and lifestyle, it’s not impossible to avoid weight gain.”
Yang offers the following tips for combating weight gain by taking one baby step at a time before you get frustrated, burntout and quit.
1. Know where you are. You got to know your numbers – weigh, body mass index (BMI), body fat, and waist measurement. User-friendly calculators can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing. If you are not sure, find a fitness trainer in the gym and hire one to your home for consultation.
2. Exercise. The study refers to an hour of moderate exercise. It doesn’t mean you have to gym every day or run on treadmill or bike. Other activites such as walking, hiking, golfing all help 300 to 400 calories. If you increase the activity level and intensity, you can even burn more calories by running, aerobics or swimming.
3. Watch your calories. The truth is that you can’t outtrain a bad diet. You can train all day, every day, but eat all night and more than you can burn off, you will gain weight.
4. Portion control. Most people are overweight for one simple reason: They eat too much. You have to learn what a serving size is. It varies depending on the type of food, form and measuring unit. You’ll find calorie counting isn’t that hard. It may be tough at first, but in time you’ll find that you don’t have to be stuffed to be satisfied. The American Dietetic Association offers good advice at http://www.eatright.org/.

Lack of motivation is one of the most cited challenges I heard over and over again when consulting my fitness training prospects,” says Carey Yang, Founder and Master Trainer of Denville, NJ-based Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC.
“Sometimes, a dream vacation could be the motivation to ‘get kicked in the butt’ in order to get in shape,” Yang says. “This time I’m going to kick my own butt and get in top shape before vacation in Hawaii. “As the leading in-home personal fitness trainer and boot camp instructor, I walk the talk and want to set a good example for my clients and for myself. So I’m announcing my own 90 day fitness challenge before my summer vacation in Hawaii.” Yang says.
Accountability means doing whatever you promise yourself to do for your personal reasons. Yang will post his daily workout, nutrition, challenges and journals through his website, blog and social media network. All is welcome to follow him in the following 90 days via:

Happy Client Praises Morris County Personal Trainer Carey Yang
Happy Client Praises Morris County Personal Trainer Carey Yang
I started working out with Carey a few weeks ago. I wanted to gain muscle, flexibility and work on my posture. I never thought that I would enjoy doing exercises but I look forward to our sessions. Carey is very knowledgeable about the mechanics of the body and uses this knowledge to make each exercise the most effective it can be, and by making sure that it is done properly, reaping the maximum benefit from
the exercise. We do different exercises each time and it is never boring or repetitive, a problem that in the past, would have made me not want to exercise. He targets the areas that I needed the most, while still working the core with each exercise. I would highly recommend him as a trainer and am looking forward to becoming a stronger person through his guidance. I will continue to train with him and to recommend him to my friends who are tired of the whole “gym” thing.

The only trick I know that will work
Today is January 22. Six percent of year 2010 (3 weeks) is almost gone that you can't take back. Are you on track achieving 6% of your goals for this year?
I have a great opportunity giving a Fitness and Wellness Seminar a few days ago. The title of my talk is "New Year, New Body, New You! - 7 Steps to Jump-Start Your New Year's Resolutions." It certainly attracted many people who wanted to lose weight and get fit. In fact, "lose weight" and "get fit" are two of the top 10 most popular New Year's resolutions of all times.
The #1 Challenge
At the very beginning of the seminar, I asked the audience to write down and share their expectations coming to this seminar and their #1 challenge that stops them from achieving their goals (lose weight and get fit) in the past. Here are some of the challenges in random order:
Late night eating
Junk food snacking
Lack of time
Lack of discipline
Just being lazy, lack of motivation
Age
Genetics
Information (lack thereof or too much)
Lack of accountability
Does any of these sound similar to you? You're not alone. They share many of the same challenges as you may have.
The numbers won't lie
According to a University of Scranton study on New Year's resolutions, a quarter of people who resolve to lose weight and change their eating habits on January 1st will go back to their old ways within a week!
So if you're still on doing something, you're better than 25% of other people. Give yourself a pat on the back. But don't get too complacent too soon. The study showed the following statistics past various milestones for the percent of people still on track.
Past the first week: 75%
Past two weeks 71%
Past one month: 64%
After 6 months: 46%
As time goes along, more and more people are falling off the "lose-weight-get-fit" bandwagon.
WHY??
Information is useful, or is it?
In the seminar, I shared my experiences, explained the Vicious Yo-Yo Diet Cycle and other pitfalls, presented my step-by-step strategies, provided tips to help them overcome their challenges. Some audience chimed in their answers. There were several great discussions as well.
Judging from the audience, I have this sense of feeling that 'lack of informatoin' or 'more new information' is NOT what stops people. It is the 'doing' part that keeps them from achieving the results. Far too many people spend time in searching, planning and getting ready. They never get to implement and actually take actions doing them.
In this age of information explosion and overload, I think we have more than enough information or too much information to keep us moving forward. Too much information can be too confusing to choose from.
Information without digestion is useless. Knowledge without actions is not power and won't give you results.
Your new resolution: 100 workouts, 100 reps!
The only 'trick' I know that will work is control what you can do and do what you can control.
If you understand this simple yet powerful concept, most of the #1 challenges listed above are no longer there. Agree?
As I said it all the time, everywhere, "losing 20 pounds' is not a healthy goal. It's an 'outcome' goal at most. It's a symptom from the outside. There's no power, compassion, desire or any emotion attached to that statement. Even if you get it, you'll lose it again. Fixing the symptom doesn't address the root causes. It will show up and repeat itself over and over again.
When you set a 'outcome' goal, you have to immediately set 'action' goal to support it. It's easy to say "I want to lose 20 pounds." What course of actions and corrections do you plan to take?
I issue a new resolution for you: 100 workouts, 100 reps! Pull out your calendar. Plan and mark 100 workouts for the year. That's just 2 workouts a week, not so much a demand, huh?! Choose 3 exercises in each workout. Perform 10 to 15 reps in each exercise and repeat for a total of 3 sets.
Sounds simple, right?!
One of the pitfalls most fitness and nutrition program fails is that people push too hard, too soon in the beginning and then quit the first sign of obstacle.
Keep it simple. Pick up the weights and start moving!

"100% wedding-dress confident. Carey helps me get into the best shape of my life and ready for my wedding!"
To shape up and look my best for my wedding, I trained with Carey for about 3 months. The results are better than I expected. In addition to the hard-core workout with Carey, I learned valuable nutritional education, diet plan and healthy eating habit. I lost a couple of inches on my thighs, my arms, and around my waist and got rid of some cellulite in my trouble area. I have dropped 6 to 7% body fat just in time to fit my wedding dress perfectly. It’s not always easy as I was so busy with work and wedding planning. I wanted to quit so many times. But Carey is always enthusiastic and energetic. He encourages me and helps me get back on track. His workout routines are always innovative and effective that I feel refreshing and every muscle is working hard all the time. I feel particularly confident and strong from the fusion workout mixed in kickboxing, yoga and Pilates. I highly recommend Carey if you want to see results. – Elizabeth M., Parsippany, NJ

Oprah Winfrey Now Weighs 200 Pounds - What She Did and Didn't Do and What Can You Learn from Her
According to a recent AP news, Oprah admitted that she has gained weight for the four years and now reaches 200 pounds.
I'm sure with Oprah's celebrity status, she'll be on the cover of every tabloid and magazine everywhere.
Winfrey's weight and height put her body mass index at 31.8, which is obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says people who are obese are "at higher risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol."
"I'm embarrassed," she writes. "I can't believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I'm still talking about my weight. She says she's added 40 pounds to her frame since she weighed 160 pounds in 2006.
Now she set her goals to be strong, healthy and fit instead of being thin. Good for her!
Winfrey was disapponited to write that "I'm talking the talk but not walking the walk." "I definitely wasn't setting the example."
Can you relate to Oprah's embarassment and frustration?
Does her yo-yo dieting and weight loss struggling story sound familiar to you?
With a team of personal trainer, health and diet experts by her side, how can they let Oprah gain 40 pounds in 4 years?
Does nobody really pay attention to her weight gain for the past four years and advise her? Come on!
With her being a weight loss expert in some respect, how can Oprah miss it without taking actions?
Why didn't Oprah and her team of experts get together and figure out a plan?
As a personal trainer and fitness coach, here is what I think and suggest:
1. You have to do your pushups for yourself.
This is one of the mottos I cite in my training principles . YOU ARE your best trainer. Hiring a personal trainer to "motivate" you or to yell at you like a drill sergeant is just an external force. It works for the short term. As a trainer, I can't do your pushups for you. You have to do them youself if you want to get some values out of it.
2. You have to hold yourself accountable.
Many people hire personal trainers and count on them to do everything they can to help them. It's true that a personal trainer can help people in many aspects in fitness training, weight loss, nutrition education, motivation, etc. But a trainer or coach can't be with you 24/7 to "motivate" you. After two hours of personal training sessions a week, you as a client are ultimately responsible for your own body for the rest of 166 hours of the week. You have to hold yourself accountable for doing cardio exercise, following the eating plan, etc.
3. You have to find your social support and mastermind group.
For Oprah is the queen and sits on top of the celebrity rank, she has to able to continue to find support, inspiration and motivation. She has to to be humble to listen to advice. Her team of experts and advisors should not feel guilty of making suggestions and telling the truth. The audience and fans should truly support her in many ways. You have to find a mastermind group (like-minded people) who are mutually support each other in healthy living habits.
4. You have to set clear goals.
And more importantly, after you reach your goals, you have to continuously set new goals. Many people, including Oprah, set goals in losing weight. The big question after reaching your weight loss goal is that, now that??
Weight maintenace is even more challenging than weight loss. The "before" and "after" testimonials in the advertisements are all very nice. The problem is that most measurements and pictures were taken right after they reached their goals. The success of weight loss should be measured by at least 3 to 5 years far out, not just one day. Studies show that 95% people put the weight back on in a year. So you have to continue to set new goals.
Another key element in goal setting is to ask yourself WHY you want to set these goals. What do you really want out of these goals? You want to bring out the enthuiasm, passion and emotion associated with these goals. They serve as the foundation or source of strength on days when you don't feel like exercising or eating healthy. They help you back on track when you're falling off the wagon.
5. You have to have a working plan to stick with.
A plan is better than none. But a poor plan that you can't stick with won't get you where you want to be. The best plan is the one that you can stick with for the long term in the areas of healthy lifestyle and habit, regular weight training and cardio exercise and balanced nutrition and eating plan.
No plan is perfect. You have to keep track and monitor your progress periodically. Make sensible changes or modifications if needed to support you to reach your goals.
