Breast Cancer Patients and Survivors Benefit from Strength Training and Cardio Exercises with Morris County NJ Fitness Trainer

Breast cancer patients and survivors can recover from treatments faster and improve their health by proper strength training and supervised exercises with certified personal trainer and fitness expert Carey Yang in Morris County, New Jersey.
Diagnosed and treated with breast cancer is a devastating experience. Breast cancer patients and survivors may be feeling down and out. “By proper strength training and supervised exercise with a certified personal trainer, cancer patients can recover faster can cancer survivors can improve their health,” says Carey Yang, Morris County NJ #1 in-home personal trainer.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
Current research provides promising evidence that exercise training is a well-tolerated and safe intervention that can mitigate several common treatment-related side effects, including fatigue, deconditioning, nausea, anxiety, and loss of muscle strength.
Over the past decade, exercise has emerged as an integral aspect of cancer survivorship and preventing or treating the late effects of therapy. Similar to during therapy, clinical trials in this setting have provided strong evidence that exercise is a well-tolerated and safe intervention associated with significant improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, fatigue, and quality of life in cancer survivors.
Several landmark observational studies have provided the first evidence that regular exercise (such as brisk walking for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) is associated with 15 percent to 61 percent reductions in the risk of mortality following a diagnosis of early-stage breast or colorectal cancer, relative to survivors who were inactive.
It is becoming increasingly evident that sedentary behavior and decreased exercise levels following a cancer diagnosis can increase treatment-related toxicities, whereas engaging in regular exercise can significantly reduce the incidence and extent of such toxicities.
The field of exercise oncology is rapidly evolving with many unanswered questions. The current evidence base provides a clear indication that exercise is an additional powerful weapon in the fight against, and recovery from, cancer.

Male Breast Cancer Survivors Find Inspiration, Support, Hope, Coping Strategies at Breast Cancer Conference Keynote

Mindful wellness expert and life coach Hueina Su was the keynote speaker inspiring and guiding nearly one hundred breast cancer patients and survivors at a breast cancer conference.

DENVILLE, NJ – April 11, 2011 – Breast cancer patients and survivors found inspiration, support, hope and coping strategies for their breast cancer journey at a recent breast cancer conference in Newton, New Jersey. The conference was co-hosted by Summit Breast Care and Beyond Horizon Coaching.

Keynote speaker at the breast cancer conference was Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, a best-selling author, mindful wellness expert, certified life coach, and the president of Beyond Horizon Coaching based in Denville, New Jersey.

The conference received overwhelmingly positive response from breast cancer patients, survivors and local community. The advance registration more than doubled from originally planned. As a result, the conference has to move from Sparta Health & Wellness Center to Project Self-Sufficiency conference room in order to accommodate more than a hundred participants, staff and vendors.

“I’m honored to be in a position to inspire, help and coach breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers through their breast cancer journey,” Su said. “Having been a registered nurse, a caregiver to family members with cancer, and having experienced a breast cancer scare myself, I know first-hand it’s a tough journey, and I’m here to help.”

Coping with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues. Su offered real life tools and tips to help breast cancer patients navigate the journey from diagnosis through treatment and to survivorship.

Since June 2010, Su has been leading a Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta, New Jersey. Over 80 cancer patients and caregivers have participated and benefited from Su’s stress relief coaching program.

“Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in cancer patients’ immune function and healing process. Learning how to cope with stress effectively is critical for their recovery and emotional well-being. Cancer patients and survivors regain a sense of control and become more confident and resilient in dealing with cancer and other life changes through learning stress relief techniques, self-care practices and life skills,” Su said.

“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with cancer and other terminally ill patients as a registered nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on physical health and emotional well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su said.

The breast cancer conference was organized by Summit Breast Care and Beyond Horizon Coaching, and sponsored by the Sparta Cancer Center, Newton Memorial Hospital, the Sussex County Cancer Coalition and Project Self-Sufficiency. Health and wellness vendors also showcased their products and services for breast cancer care.

Beat Breast Cancer with Exercise and Weight Lifting

It's a very physically and emotionally draining process when breast cancer patients undergo cancer treatment. For years, breast cancer patients are usually advised not to lift anyting heavy after surgery.

New research shows that strength training after lump removal could help decrease risk of lymphedema (a limb-swelling condition) by 35 percent according to a University of Pennsylvania study.

The researchers say that the small amount of physiological stress that weight lifting puts on the body helps increase it's ability to fight inflammation - a key cause of lymphedema.

Cancer patients are recommended to get the doctor's approval before starting a weight lifting or strength training program. Also look for a certified personal fitness trainer who understand your conditions and can tailor the workout routine and exercise program to your needs.

Study Shows Postivie Benefits for Breast Cancer Survivors by Lifting Weight

A new study published shows that weight lifting can benefit breast cancer survivors in many different ways.

In fact, the study found that lifting weights under supervision may lower women’s chances of developing lymphedema, according to results that will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Lymphedema is a painful and potentially debilitating swelling of the limbs that occurs when lymph fluid cannot drain from lymph nodes as it does in healthy people.

Breast cancer survivors are often told to avoid lifting children, heavy bags or substantial weight with the arm on the side of their body from which armpit-area lymph nodes were removed. Doctors feared any stress to the arm could trigger lymphedema.

But Katheryn H. Schmitz, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and other researchers wondered if this advice left women with weakened arms and, ironically, at greater risk for lymphedema when they were not able to avoid lifting a weight.

Schmitz and colleagues followed 154 female cancer patients who had at least two lymph nodes removed in the past five years. Half of the women were randomly chosen to participate in a 13-week supervised weight-lifting program. The other half were not enrolled in the exercise program.

A year later, 11 percent of the women in the weight-lifting group developed lymphedema, compared with 17 percent of the women in the no-exercise group.

Lifting weights, under the watch of a trained supervisor, can lower breast cancer patients risk of lymphedema.

Benefits of Drinking Green Tea to Slow Breast Cancer Growth

There have been many studies and reports on the benefits of green tea to health and weight management.

A new study presented at the Experimental Biology 2008 conference showed that the green tea antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) significantly slowed breast cancer growth in female mice.

The researchers found that green tea's anticancer effects may be largely due to its high content of EGCG. This antioxidant ingredient helps the body's cells from becoming damaged and aging prematurely.

According to the researcher Jian-Wei Gu at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, the green tea antioxidant may work against breast cancer by suppressing blood vessel growth in breast tumors as well as slowing the proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells.

Follow-up studies on human tissues are required. In the meantime, green tea is a healthy beverage providing caffeine-alternative and many antioxidant benefits.
